History of Kajri Dance
The birth of the Kajri dance seems to take place in Mirzapur. The story of this dance began when King Kantit Naresh’s daughter Kajali loved her husband but unfortunately could not meet him throughout her life and when she could no more bear the separation and cried at the feet of goddess Kajmal and the songs famous today as Kajri songs.
Style of Kajri Dance
This dance is done along with Jhula lyrics or swing songs. It is a genre of semi-classical singing. one type of Kajri dance is performed on a performance platform and the other is sung by women on monsoon evenings which is known as Dhumnuiya Kajri.
The arrival of the monsoon clouds brings rain and joy and the women sing songs and express joy and swing with joy. It relieves them from the scorching summer.
Costumes of Kajri Dance
The dancers wear tight and short blouses called choli and a flared skirt. They put on a dupatta and it is tucked in the waist of the skirt and is draped around the head and shoulder. the dancers wear heavy pieces of jewelry. The costumes resemble the dance pattern of the kathak school.
